There are several options when it comes to auto-transporting your classic/antique vehicles ,but what is really the safest and most appropriate environment for the transportation of your vehicle? below I will explain some important tips to consider if you are thinking of auto-transporting your pride and joy .

               CHOOSE AN ENCLOSED CARRIER

Customers will have the option of both enclosed or open carriers to transport their vehicles, however all auto transporting companies or brokers  like A-Z auto transport  will recommend using an enclosed carrier, which is the most use and more favorite choice for customers moving a classic vehicle, it will cost up to 60% more than an open carrier.  It offers moved on a flatbed car transport carrier. This means that your classic vehicle is the auto transport carrier's only priority. Also an enclosed carrier will offer much more protection and provide the peace of mind you need when it comes to your irreplaceable vehicle. Below I will show pictures of both carriers, you will agree that enclosed is the best choice .

                     DOOR TO DOOR SERVICE

There are many reasons why I recommend door to door service over terminal to terminal  when thinking of auto transporting your antique/classic vehicles, lets start with the convenience of having your vehicle pickup and drop off at your door rather than a terminal storage that can be miles away from you. Next in line is the security issue, terminal have less security and its not a safe environment for an antique vehicle. Another downside is damage to your vehicle, when the vehicle is dropped off at a terminal you are not there to inspect your vehicle for damage like you would for door to door auto transport service. Remember your vehicle may be transported by numerous carriers to the terminal where you will retrieve it. Therefore, it may sit outside exposed to the elements while waiting for the next leg of the trip. This is certainly not the service you want for your classic vehicle.

                PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR PICKUP

Once you've  decided on a company preferable [A-Z auto-transport] and  have chosen your carrier type then you are ready to prepare your vehicle for pick up, before your vehicle is picked up it is a good idea to do some inspection and take pictures. This inspection should cover every detail of your vehicle.
Have your vehicle clean inside out, make sure there are no loose items or personal belongings inside your vehicle as these might be damaged or caused damaged while in transit. Give written instructions to the car transporter with anything they'll need to know about your vehicle, such as fuel cut-off and hidden switches, alarm instructions or any other information required to start your vehicle.
Make sure your vehicle is inspected again upon delivery in case you need to make any damage claims. This is very important .

Finally, the most important tip to remember is to take your time, even if you are in a rush, do proper research and gain as much knowledge as you can about auto transport and shipping. This way you and your vehicle are sure to have a good auto transporting experience.

Auto shipping is a perfectly suited process for transporting high value motor cars, whether you are an antique collector, a car fanatic or purchasing an antique car for the first time.

As expert care is required to ensure your antique car arrives in good condition, best be prudent when selecting an auto shipping company to handle your car in transit. Before you begin preparing your vehicle for transit, there are ten things to consider when shipping your high value or antique car.

Do

Do hire the help necessary for your transport

Especially if your car is being transported overseas, hiring an international auto transport company can help make the process easier. An international auto transport company will not only have beneficial relationships with organizations around the world, but will also make sure the necessary documents are filled out according to countries’ customs guidelines.

Do ask what kind of trailer will be towing your vehicle

If using ground transportation, the choice between open-container transport and closed-container transport is one you’ll have to make. Though open transport may initially be cheaper, it invites the risk of damage from flying road debris and your vehicle getting dirty from dust and rain. These damages have the potential to cost you more than expected, in the end.

Do document the condition of your car before transport

Considering the fragility of antique and classic cars, it is important to take detailed notes of the condition of your car before shipping, should any damage occur while in transit. Insurance on your car is also recommended in case of damage.

                                            Auto transport quote
Do have a quarter tank of gas

While it can be harmful to your car to ship it with a tank more than a quarter full, it is equally as important to not ship your car on an empty tank. Of course, if your antique or highly-valued classic car is no longer running, gas is not necessary. But if your car is running, a bit of gas in the tank may be required during the company’s loading and unloading.

Do be reachable while your car is in transit

Be sure to provide the auto-shipping company with a number at which you can be reached at all times. This will ensure that the company can easily contact you in case of emergency in your auto transport.

Don't

Do not wait until the last minute to book your auto transport

Especially when dealing with highly valuable automobiles, give yourself enough time to sort through the details and to be completely prepared for your car’s transit. It is recommended you book your auto transport as soon as you can in order to coordinate transport, insurance and unloading details.

Do not assume every auto transport company is an expert

Even if a company has a track record of moving cars, your antique car requires the utmost expertise. Ask the companies you are considering what their experience with antique car shipping is and see if they mention the other do’s and don’ts listed here.

                                                   Auto transport quote

Do not forget to remove your personal items or removable car accessories

As antique and classic cars often come with removable interior car features, it is important to remove all loose objects in the car. Not only will this prevent potential damage to your car (if items move around while in transit), but it will deflect any potential theft.

Do not postpone troublesome maintenance issues

Antique and classic cars often require more maintenance than younger vehicles. To ensure a smooth shipping process and minimal damage to your car or others, ensure that loose or unfastened parts, flat tires and leaky fluid lines are taken care of before you load your car.

Do not forget the details

As antique and classic cars tend to call for more delicate care, it’s important for you to explain to the shipping company the special handling your car requires. For instance, some cars might require particular accommodations in order to firmly strap them down. To ensure that your car is delivered damage-free, be sure to relay these details to your auto transport company.

                                                                                                                                                                            1. HOW QUICKLY YOU NEED VEHICLE SHIPPED

Auto transport takes time, so book your order as far  in advance as possible 7-10 days or more cushion is ok. Once your order is placed and confirmed, A-Z Auto Transport delivery averages 3-14 days depending on the distance of transport. below are common time frames for shipping between different part of the country.

*EAST to WEST                      5 to 14 days

*MIDWEST TO EAST              3 to     8 days

*MIDWEST TO WEST             3 to      8 days

*SOUTH TO NORTH               3 to       8 days

        2. WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE ARE YOU SHIPPING

Vehicles like trucks, SUVs and vans are more expensive to transport than sedans or compacts. Modifications of vehicle like being lowered, lifted or oversize tires will also determine the transport cost. Basically the lager the vehicle the higher the cost will be for auto transporting and shipping.

        3. WHERE IS THE VEHICLE BEING SHIPPED TO AND FROM

The distance plays a major role in the cost to transport your vehicle, as you probably guessed, the further the distance the vehicle will be transported the higher the price will be. Also if the pickup or drop off points are not heavily traveled routes or in hard to reach areas off the main highway  more fuel is needed, and you will pay more. If the transporter needs to get through a residential area, there are extra charges for permits and  this will impact the transport cost as well.

     4. IS YOUR VEHICLE OPERABLE OR INOPERABLE

If your vehicle is inoperable it will increase the transport cost between $150-$250 more, if the transporter will have to use special equipment or tow truck to get the vehicle on or off the trailer it will cost you extra .

           5. WHAT SERVICE DO YOU WANT DOOR to DOOR or TERMINAL to TERMINAL

Door to Door service is often less expensive. If your vehicle is transported Terminal to Terminal storage fees will accumulate each day its kept in the storage yard. Also, a terminal may be miles away from you, which can add travel costs for you to get to the closest terminal yard.

Door to Door shipping is more frequently use as it is consider to be more convenient.

        6. DO YOU WANT  AN OPEN OR AN ENCLOSED CARRIER

The type of carrier truck used to transport your vehicle is a major factor in determining the cost of auto-transport. If you are considering using an enclosed carrier this will be more expensive up to 75%-100% more than what an open carrier would cost for the same distance, this is because an enclosed carrier has less space and will not exposed your vehicle to road elements, it has extra security and it is considered to be safer while an open carrier will  exposed  vehicle to road elements and has less security.

BELOW ARE TWO OTHER MAIN FACTORS THAT DETERMINE AUTO TRANSPORT COST.

                   SEASONAL FACTOR

Understanding the seasonal fluctuations and how they affect car shipping prices enables you to plan ahead and choose wisely when it comes to  transporting your vehicle from one place to another.

In September as winter draws near car transport cost slowly increases going into the holiday season. Begin in January many people are traveling south for winter and need their vehicles shipped. The problem is that a lot of transporters take a week or two off during the holidays, which decreases the supply of trucks on the market. As a result of the supply and demand, prices will go up, at least for the short term. After the holidays, car shipping prices slowly decreases when the supply of carriers normalizes.

During the months of March to May, snowbird season is in full effect as people are moving back North from the Southern States. During these months the price to ship a vehicle from Florida to New York is higher compared to the same route in the opposite direction. Expect to pay more if you are shipping your vehicle up north during the spring.

The period between spring late (May) and early (September) is a very busy season for the auto transport industry. This is the time that offer the best weather conditions for fast and safe auto transport. Summer is known as peak season for the auto transport industry, cars are bought and sold, people are shipping their cars to their vacation homes and more new vehicles are purchase, all increasing the demand of auto transport trucks. Summer is also the time of year most people relocate due to job changes. It is  these times customers will have to pay more in order to get their vehicle ship on time.

The fall months of late September to November represents a transition period and the beginning of the snowbird season. Snowbirds are people from the northern states that move down south during the winter months, and then move back north in the spring, shipping their vehicle with auto transport company both ways. During this time ,expect to pay more.

                   GAS PRICES  FACTOR

The price of fuel as an impact on auto-transport cost as well .when gas prices rise ,so does the cost of transport .The transporters use diesel fuel so watch the price of fuel when considering auto transport.

It is important to know that most of the companies from which you will receive "QUOTES are brokers like A-Z auto transport .

You will receive a lot of  quotes through calls, emails and text messages ,the level of service usually is the difference ,so the company you choose will depend on your needs and budget. Some companies will offer higher quotes while other will offer a little lower ,some companies will even offer extremely low quotes to get the job but be advise that the cheapest is not always the way to go ,it is ok to choose the cheapest quote if you don't need your vehicle in a timely manner .Because the cost is low ,your vehicle will be shipped on a space-available basis. This means ,it could take a few days or several weeks to get your vehicle. If you have just one vehicle this may not be the best choice but if you have multiple vehicles and are driving one or have access to a vehicle at your new destination, then this option may work".

Compare the two different carriers below .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              OPEN CARRIER AUTO TRANSPORT

Open carriers happens on 3-10 cars carriers .This leaves the vehicles exposed to the elements of wind, dirt ,dust, snow, rain etc. Although not as exposed as if they were being driven .

Enclosed carriers happens in containers that are completely enclosed and locked down. There are no more than 2 or  3 cars per truck load .There is no exposure of the elements .To load extra cars ,the trailers must be equipped with special equipment for the vehicle bay ,as the picture below show .

Enclosed auto transport will cost between 75% and 100% more than the open auto transport.

If you have a classic ,or high-end  luxury car enclosed carrier is a good choice but for your average vehicle its ok to use an open carrier ,its your choice so whatever you choose is ok .

*What Is The Difference Between Door to Door And Terminal to Terminal  Services

Shipping a vehicle is a lot easier today than it was 10-15 years ago. Many auto transport companies have various options when selecting the type  of transport you require, one of those is terminal to terminal car transport versus door to door car transport .

Door to Door Auto Transport is when your car is both picked up and dropped of right at your door ,it is very convenient for both you and the driver ,especially if you live near a main highway, though it is more expensive, for most customers the convenience is worth the extra because your door to door transport company will come to you rather than drop it off at a nearby terminal .This is the most use service today.

Terminal to Terminal Auto Transport is when you deliver your vehicle to a vehicle storage location where the car carrier will then pick up your vehicle. It is delivered to a similar type of location near your final destination. Terminal shipping is often less expensive than door to door service .This service benefits people who want to drop off or pick up their vehicle on specific dates and times.Terminal to Terminal service take longer than door to door but if this is not an issue then terminal shipping is right for you .

*What Payment Methods Is Required

Auto transport companies, like any business accept multiple forms of payments. In general most customers will pay using a credit card .The reason for this is that it is easy to process payments over the phone or even online. Most companies take a deposit upfront for the service, the balance will be paid to the driver when the service is being complete. This balance is paid with cash or check.

Preparing your vehicle for auto transport

When you are moving your vehicle from one city to the other, you have to work with a car shipping company and these companies will not drive your vehicle but transport it on a car carrier truck.  So it is important to take necessary steps to be prepared for shipping your vehicle.

Step 1.
* wash your Vehicle properly.

Washing your vehicle before shipping is very important, as it allows you to easily identify any dents, scratches or other visible damages on the vehicle. If you come across any such damage we highly recommend taking pictures of the vehicle from various angles and few close up shot as well, of the damage areas. It is also very wise to date your pictures.

Washing your car before shipping it.

Step 2
*Remove personal items
Customers often ask if they can pack stuffs in the vehicle during shipping. Some drivers will allow between 100 to 150 lbs in the trunk, however it is against federal law to pack household items in the car due to insurance liabilities. Where as the car is fully insured during transit the items inside the car will not be covered for insurance. Even when given that knowledge customers still go ahead to pack personal items. We strongly advise against packing any fragile items, anything that can be easily damage such as glass, TVs, computers and so forth.
These items may also shift during transport and cause damage to your vehicle, another vehicle or the transport truck and you will be responsible for the damages.

Step 3
* Vehicle condition
Your vehicle will be driven minimally during the transport process, nonetheless it should be in good driving condition. If your vehicle is inoperable (not driving) it still can be transported, however it is very important to advised the transporter before pickup time so they can make the necessary preparation in having the correct equipment for the job.
Also advising the carrier of any possible oil leaks is important, in preventing oil spilling on other vehicle by safely packing it on the lower rig.

For operable vehicles, mechanical issues can cause damages and delays so we recommend a maintenance check before shipping. if there are any mechanical problems or leaks it is important to inform the driver of such issues.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Vehicles with leaks should not be place on the top rack of a multi-car carrier because it can drip on the vehicles below .Also if vehicle have a mechanical problem that requires special steps to drive your car on and off trailer  for ex(starting or stopping ) give these instructions to the driver .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Step 4
* Don't Gas Up                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Your vehicle will be transported on a carrier not driven ,so no need to fill tank up prior to shipping .In addition a full tank makes vehicle heavier . leave a small amount of gas in car when preparing to transport .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Step 5                                                                                                                                          *Disable Alarm                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Turn off or disable your car alarm ,if you cannot disable it,provide detailed information to driver on how to turn off alarm in case  it triggered.                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Remember when you prepare your car for transport using these steps ,its more likely to arrive on time and without damage.

Car Transport Tips

Preparation for Car Transport

A. COST OF SHIPPING A VEHICLE

The first question you'll want answered is "What is the total cost of shipping my car?" To get a good price, complete the quote form or call us at 561-923-0803
  • origin/destination - include ZIP codes if possible
  • approximate departure date
  • type of vehicle(s)
  • preferred shipping options (see Tip. B)

                                                                                                            Get Free quote

Just remember that the cheapest price is not always the best.

B. SHIPPING OPTIONS

To get an accurate quote and be able to compare quotes between companies, make sure you understand your shipping options and what your preferences are:
  • door-to-door vs. terminal-to-terminal - For door-to-door shipping, the car carrier picks-up your vehicle at your home or workplace and delivers your vehicle to your final destination. For terminal-to-terminal shipping, you deliver your vehicle to a vehicle storage location where the car carrier will then pick up your vehicle. It is delivered to a similar type of location near your final destination.
  • open or enclosed - Open transport is the less expensive and most common way to ship a vehicle. Enclosed transport is typically priced higher, and it protects your vehicle from dust, rain, snow and other elements. High-end vehicles are sometimes shipped enclosed.
  • operable or inoperable - Operable vehicles can be driven onto the truck.

C.PERSONAL ITEMS

Personal items are typically NOT allowed in your vehicle. Most carriers are not licensed or insured to transport household items. Also, the additional weight can put carriers over their weight limit and items of value are easily stolen from an automobile's trunk.

D. TIME IN TRANSIT

The time that your car is in transit will be dependent on a number of factors, including the origin and destination, time of year, and the actual truck that will be shipping your car. When you get quotes from car transport companies, you should also ask about estimated shipping time. The following are common time frames for shipping between different parts of the country.
East to West- 5 to 14 days
Midwest to East- 3 to 8 days
Midwest to West - 3 to 8 days
South to North - 3 to 8 days

E. PAYMENT METHOD

While some car transport companies may not require payment in advance, most require a deposit (10-25% of the total cost) or full payment in advance. If a deposit is given, the remaining amount due is required at the time of delivery – oftentimes with a cashiers check or cash. Some auto transport companies do accept credit cards, but they may charge a 2-3% surcharge.

F. CONTRACT

READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY!!!

  • Ask for a contract clause (in writing) that waives the cancellation fee if the car is not picked up by your car transport company within some number of days of the scheduled pickup date. If you cancel within the allotted window, expect to pay some fee, which may vary from $50 to $250. Although most cars are picked up on the scheduled date or within a few days of that date, a 1 or 2 week delay may occasionally happen. Your cancellation clause should allow for at least a week beyond the scheduled pickup date.
  • It is difficult for any car transport company to promise a delivery date, however, if your car transport company offers a guarantee that covers a rental car, find out the cost of the guarantee (if any) and the maximum dollars per day covered.

G. INSURANCE

Your vehicle(s) should be insured against damage and theft by your car transport company. Take the following four steps to be sure of the coverage:
  • Get a copy of Their Insurance Coverage.
  • Determine if the carrier's insurance is Primary or Secondary to your own insurance in the event of damage during car transport.
  • Ask if there is a damage deductible.
  • VERIFY EVERYTHING IN WRITING.
In addition, your own car insurance may cover your vehicle in transit – check with your car insurance company to verify. Keep in mind that many car transport companies may discourage or prohibit you from leaving personal articles in your vehicle. Any personal articles left in the car are not insured – your home policy may cover these articles, but you should check with your home insurance agent to verify. ALSO NOTE: overloading your trunk with heavy items may result in damage to your car's undercarriage. Your car transport company may not cover damage in that instance.

H. PICK-UP & DELIVERY DATES

Ask for estimated pick-up and delivery times from your car transport company. You should be able to get a 3-day window for pick-up – during the busy summer or snow bird season the window may be larger, but the car transport company should warn you of possible delays ahead of time. BE SKEPTICAL OF EXACT PICK-UP AND DELIVERY DATES promised by auto transport companies – If you are promised exact dates, get it in writing and state the remedy if service is not performed on the promised dates ($50 discount, no fee to cancel, reimbursement for rental car, etc.). Once the pick-up is made, your car transport company should provide you with a fairly precise delivery date. If you need an exact date for pick-up, most car transport services can pick-up your car and hold it at a terminal for an additional charge.

I. PREPARE FOR PICK-UP

Use the following tips to be ready for your car pick-up:
  • Wash your car, so that you can properly inspect it and there are no disagreements over responsibility for any damage.
  • Remove personal items from your vehicle (see Tip.C).
  • Remove or secure any special effects on your car, such as spoilers, fog lights and antennas. These can easily be damaged during transport.
  • Be sure your car battery is charged, so your car can be easily loaded and unloaded from the carrier.

J. PAPERWORK

"Original Inspection Report" only for domestic

K. DELIVERY OF YOUR VEHICLE

At the time of delivery, inspect your vehicle SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY and compare the condition and mileage against the "Original Inspection Report" provided by your car transport company at origination. Be sure to inspect the roof and under the front and rear bumpers. If there are inconsistencies, note them as exceptions and be sure the driver signs it. NEVER ACCEPT YOUR VEHICLE AT NIGHT IF YOU CANNOT VERIFY ITS CONDITION – without being viewed and signed by the driver, you have little recourse if damage occurred during transit.

L. IF DAMAGE SHOULD OCCUR

If this should happen, note all damage on your inspection report (see Tip#12), obtain the driver's signature, and contact your car transport company. The car transport company should then work with you to reimburse you for verifiable damage done to your car.
